Earlier he said four drones were destroyed at 13:38. Three more at 14:36. Emergency crews are working at the crash sites.
People in west, east and south Moscow say they heard explosions.
No word yet from Ukraine's government or military.
That's everything we know.
Why this mattersSo Moscow's airports have shut down from drones before. But not all four, in daylight, at once. That's the bigger story here.
This has been building for two months. Moscow's airports keep closing because of the drone threat. Flights keep getting delayed. Chaos, over and over.
And overnight it was already bad. Sobyanin said more than 600 drones flew toward Moscow the night before, and 163 were shot down near the city. Then, separately, 155 more drones came at the Moscow region overnight into today. Most were stopped a long way out. Five were stopped right on Moscow's approach.
So today isn't a one-off. It's the next step in weeks of rising drone activity over the Russian capital.
And the timing is important.
The Kremlin says trilateral talks on Ukraine are planned for Abu Dhabi in the first half of November. Russia, the United States and Ukraine. Not just Russia and Ukraine, like people sometimes assume. America is at the table too.
There's also a bigger argument running underneath all this. Is Russian airspace even safe to fly in?
Two months ago, Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine's President, told airlines Russian airspace was becoming unsafe. He said it would close in practice because of Ukrainian drone attacks. Vladimir Putin called that a declaration of terrorism.
Today looks a lot like what Zelensky was warning about.
And history says this can get much worse. In March 2025, a drone attack shut all four Moscow airports and killed at least three people. Russia's defence ministry said 337 drones were destroyed that night, 91 of them over the Moscow region. Back in July 2023, a drone attack wounded one person, damaged two buildings and briefly shut Vnukovo.
So how does today compare? Nobody can say yet.
Sobyanin has only confirmed interceptions. Not damage. Not deaths or injuries. And no outlet has a verified final drone count for today — his own number kept climbing all afternoon.
The airports are still closed right now. Nobody outside Moscow can yet say how big this attack really was, or whether anything got through.
