Yemen just claimed its biggest one-day toll of Houthi fighters
Yemen's government says its forces killed or wounded 1,540 Houthi fighters in the past 24 hours.
That's one of the heaviest tolls its army has claimed since this war started heating back up in July.
Colonel Majed Abdullah al-Nazili speaks for Yemen's government armed forces. He says troops ran 474 operations against Houthi positions in the past day alone.
Where? Six provinces. Al-Jawf, Marib, Al-Bayda, Lahj, Sanaa and Saada.
How? Warplanes, drones, artillery, missiles and rocket launchers. The army says it also destroyed or disabled 216 military vehicles and other equipment.
Most of the claimed killed and wounded were around Taiz, al-Nazili says. And he didn't mention a single loss on his own side.
So can anyone check this number? No. Nobody has independently verified any of it. And the Houthis haven't responded to the figure itself.
Here's the thing though. This isn't a one-off.
Two days before this, the army said it ran 468 operations on three fronts, and said hundreds of fighters were killed or wounded then too. The night before that, it said it hit high-value targets in Sanaa and 11 more in Saada, hitting the Al-Nahdain and Jabal Attan areas of the capital. At the time, Colonel al-Nazili posted online that the armed forces have the ability to run strategic attacks on the Houthis. Separately, the air force said it ran 27 strikes in Taiz in three hours, hitting what it called an integrated military system, including a missile depot and command centres.
So these big numbers are now coming out almost every day. Not a single spike.
Houthi-run al-Masirah TV confirmed Sanaa was hit again today. It said the strikes were Saudi aggression, but gave no detail on casualties or targets. An AFP reporter said they heard at least five explosions in the city. Another AFP reporter said they saw two warplanes firing missiles into Sanaa. Saudi Arabia hasn't said anything.
