Ukraine just lost every working power plant it has
Ukraine's president just said something he's never said before.
Every single power plant in the country has been damaged.
Volodymyr Zelensky said it a day ago, in Madrid, at the 30th Ibero-American Summit. He said Russian strikes have hit every power plant in Ukraine, in one way or another.
Standing next to Pedro Sánchez, Spain's Prime Minister, he asked Spain and Latin American countries for one thing. Equipment. Transformers, power cables, electrical gear, diesel and gas generators. Enough to get Ukraine through winter.
So why now? Because of what happened the night before.
Russia fired 227 attack drones at Ukraine, starting at six in the evening and running into the next morning. Ukraine's air force shot down or jammed 196 of them. Around 15 were still flying as of eight that morning, with fighting still going on. Drones hit 14 locations. Debris from the rest turned up at eight more.
That one night knocked out power in seven regions. Vinnytsia, Dnipropetrovsk, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhia, Kyiv, Kharkiv and Chernihiv.
Artem Nekrasov is Ukraine's Deputy Energy Minister. He says the worst of it is around Kyiv, where engineers have had to impose restrictions on the network just to manage the damage.
And here's the thing. This wasn't even the big one.
Three days before that, Russia hit Ukraine harder. 289 drones. 17 ballistic missiles. 59 cruise missiles. Zelensky said that attack mainly hit energy sites in nine other regions. Odesa, Cherkasy, Zhytomyr, Vinnytsia, Kharkiv, Dnipropetrovsk, Chernivtsi, Chernihiv and Rivne.
The day after that one, air defence shot down or jammed 272 drones in a single night. That's more drones than Russia even launched in the attack that followed it.
