Donald Trump says a big agreement is close. And he says it won't just cover Ukraine.
He says it could cover the security of all of Europe.
He said this a few hours ago, in the Oval Office. Right after meeting Kirill Dmitriev.
So who is that? Russia's special envoy. He also runs Russia's sovereign wealth fund.
Here's what Donald Trump actually said: "There's going to be an agreement, it's going to be a big agreement and it's going to involve more than Ukraine."
He didn't stop there. He said a deal with Russia could reshape the security of the whole continent, not just end the war in Ukraine, and he said everyone would be thrilled with it.
And here's why that matters. This is the first time Donald Trump has talked about a Russia-Ukraine deal this way.
So what's actually in it? He didn't say. He declined to give any details about what he and Kirill Dmitriev talked about.
A big claim. Nothing yet to back it up.
Now, why was Kirill Dmitriev even at the White House? He was there for an event hosted by Melania Trump, the First Lady. It marked a six-day humanitarian ceasefire in Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city in Ukraine. That ceasefire ran from 27 October to 1 November. Melania Trump says it let nearly 800 people evacuate.
Kirill Dmitriev thanked her on Vladimir Putin's behalf for what he called her distinguished humanitarian role. Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine's President, later gave Melania Trump Ukraine's Order of Princess Olga, First Class, for the same reason.
Two Ukrainian officials were at that event too. Davyd Arakhamia, who leads the parliamentary faction of Volodymyr Zelensky's party. And Dmytro Lubinets, Ukraine's human rights ombudsman.
But here's the thing. Donald Trump confirmed he didn't meet with them himself. He didn't say why.

So the Ukrainians who showed up got the ceremony. Russia's envoy got the one-on-one with the president.
And this is happening alongside two other tracks of talks, in the same week.
In Brussels, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser, have been holding security talks. With Ukrainian, NATO and European officials. Jared Kushner says quote "the broader security architecture needed to ensure that when the fighting stops".
Rustem Umerov, Ukraine's lead negotiator, says those talks included the US, UK, France, Germany, the EU, NATO, the World Bank and BlackRock. He says the group also discussed the threats Russia poses to Ukraine and to the whole of Europe, and how to counter them together.
So a Ukrainian official used almost the same words Donald Trump used a day later. All of Europe. Not just Ukraine.
Are they describing the same plan? Nobody knows.
Then there's Abu Dhabi. Russia, Ukraine and the United States are due to hold trilateral peace talks there on 10 and 11 November. The first three-way talks since February. Vladimir Medinsky, an aide to Vladimir Putin, is expected to lead Russia's delegation. Steve Witkoff says those talks will cover security arrangements for after the war, easing tensions, humanitarian work and the next steps toward peace.
But while all this diplomacy is happening, the war hasn't slowed down. Russia and Ukraine traded airstrikes overnight before the Brussels talks opened. Ukraine's national police say 42 bodies have been recovered after a strike on Komyshuvakha, in the Zaporizhzhia region.
So the fighting and the diplomacy are running side by side. Not one after the other.
Neither Ukraine's government nor Russia's government has responded publicly to Donald Trump's claim about a deal covering all of Europe. Nobody knows if Volodymyr Zelensky has been told what Donald Trump actually has in mind. Nobody knows if European governments have agreed to be part of whatever this is.
Donald Trump has been pursuing closer ties with Moscow in recent weeks. That includes a deal with Vladimir Putin to lift sanctions on Russian diesel exports, reached during the US midterm election campaign.
So here's where this stands. A deal Donald Trump describes as covering a whole continent. No agreed terms attached to it. No confirmed Russian account of what was actually discussed. And no public word yet from the country whose territory is actually being fought over.
