Ukraine just gave Melania Trump its highest honour for women.

It's called the Order of Princess Olha, 1st Class. Volodymyr Zelensky signed the decree himself.

So why does the American First Lady get Ukraine's top award?

She brokered a six-day ceasefire. It ran around Oleshky, a Russian-occupied city, from 27 October to 1 November. That's the longest pause in fighting since the war started in February 2022.

The decree is dated 2 November. It only became public three days later. Official number: Presidential Decree No. 1079/2026.

What does it actually say? It credits her with, quote, a significant personal contribution to humanitarian support for Ukraine. Plus human rights work and helping displaced children.

1st Class is the top tier. There are three. The honour has existed since 1997.

Who else has it? Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief. The Kyiv Independent says Nancy Pelosi got it back in 2022. Newsweek says Iceland's Prime Minister, Kristrún Frostadóttir, got it this year too. Only Kallas checks out in both.

Now here's the number everyone's repeating. Melania Trump posted that the ceasefire let nearly 800 people get out of Oleshky.

But that's her number. Not Kyiv's. Not Moscow's.

Ukraine's human rights ombudsman, Dmytro Lubinets, says the real figures can't be released. The terms of the deal don't allow it.

So nobody who actually fought this war has confirmed the 800.

The White House is going further than Ukraine even did. It says Melania Trump started the whole thing herself, and calls it an unprecedented diplomatic initiative by an American First Lady.

Zelensky sounds just as pleased. He told Fox News, quote, "if the first lady can do it, can continue, it's very helpful."

That's Ukraine's president asking her to do this again.

And here's the thing. Russia's side of this is much quieter than it looks.

The Kremlin hasn't objected to the award at all. But its press secretary, Dmitry Peskov, says Russia has no current plans for another humanitarian pause like this one.
