Why this mattersSo who was Daniel Umansky?
His family moved to Israel once. Then, about 20 years ago, they moved back to Ukraine. His grandparents still live in Israel. Jewish community groups in Kyiv are now helping fly his body there for burial.
And here's why this made it to a foreign ministry statement. Israeli deaths in Ukraine are rare. Rare enough that Jerusalem responds officially when one happens.
Israel's Foreign Ministry says quote "a 14 years old Israeli citizen was killed".
It says 20 people were hurt in that same strike, including the boy's mother. It sent condolences to his family, and to everyone else who's lost someone in these attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.
Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine's president, called the strike savage and sickening, and said it had no military logic behind it.
The building itself tells you how hard it was hit. Apartments on the ninth and tenth floors are burned out.
One woman who lived there, Alisa Boyko, said Russia is trying to make sure everyone in Kyiv gets hit one way or another.
Here's the pattern behind it. Russia has been using newer jet-powered drones against Kyiv. These get past some of Ukraine's air defences. That's likely why strikes like this are now landing in daylight, not just overnight.
Russia says it doesn't target civilians on purpose. This war started with Russia's full invasion of Ukraine in 2022. It's now run four and a half years.
The United Nations says it counted at least 200 civilian deaths in Ukraine this September alone. Homes, hospitals, shops and workplaces were all hit.
And there's still no end in sight. Zelensky says America has proposed three-way talks between Ukraine, Russia and America, possibly hosted in the United Arab Emirates. He also says Donald Trump has made a final decision letting Ukraine build its own Patriot air-defence missiles under licence.
A separate strike killed one person at a postal facility in Odesa the same day. Zelensky called it a double-tap strike.
What we don't know: whether Russia knew Israeli citizens were in that building. Whether Israel will raise this directly with Moscow.
For now, a family that left Ukraine and came back is burying a 14-year-old boy. And Kyiv is still counting its dead.
