Then a second missile came in. The Air Force flagged it at 1:27 a.m. More explosions hit at 1:28 a.m., according to Chris York, the Kyiv Independent's war editor.
No word yet on anyone killed or hurt, or on damage. That's everything we know.
Why this mattersSo why does this matter? Because Kyiv has now been hit three nights running.
The morning before, on 23 September, Russian drones killed two people in Kyiv and wounded at least 43. They hit railway infrastructure, homes and a historic market.
The morning before that, on 22 September, Russian jet-powered drones wounded at least eight people across the city.
And Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine's President, had already warned this was coming. On 23 September he said Ukraine had intelligence that Russia was preparing a new mass attack. He said it right after a security meeting with Andy Burnham, the UK Prime Minister.
Go back one more night, to 21-22 September, and it gets bigger. Russian strikes killed at least three people in Dnipro. Nearly 100,000 people in the Chernihiv region lost power. Ukraine's air force said that single barrage used 212 drones, four cruise missiles, and an unspecified number of Oniks and ballistic missiles.
Here's the thing. That strike landed while Volodymyr Zelensky was in New York, at the UN General Assembly.
And that's exactly where the diplomacy is meant to be happening right now. Sergey Lavrov, Russia's Foreign Minister, is in New York too. He was due to meet Marco Rubio, the US Secretary of State, on 23 September, as the Trump administration pushes for ceasefire talks.
Russia has not said anything about this overnight strike. But the Kremlin has already told everyone what to expect. It has said before that it will not stop military operations just because talks are happening.
So what don't we know? How much damage this strike caused. Whether anyone was hurt. What Russia was actually aiming at in the city centre.
Right now, only one outlet has reported this strike in detail: the Kyiv Independent, citing its own staff on the ground and Ukraine's Air Force.
Russia has hit Kyiv three nights running this week, while its own foreign minister sits down with American officials in New York. Nobody in Moscow has said whether that continues.
