America just punished Trump at the polls over the Iran war
Donald Trump just said it himself.
The war with Iran cost Republicans Congress.
He told Fox News a few hours ago why his party lost the House and the Senate. His words: part of it was Iran.
He also said people understand the importance of what he's done.
So here's what happened on election night. Democrats flipped at least seven Senate seats. That ends the Republican majority. They took the House too.
And this is the part that should worry Republicans. Some of those seats were in states Trump won in 2024. Texas. Ohio. Kansas.
Sherrod Brown beat Jon Husted in Ohio. James Talarico beat Trump's own pick, Ken Paxton, in Texas. Adam Hamilton took Kansas for the Democrats — the state's first Democratic Senate win since the 1930s.
Now here are the numbers behind it. An Associated Press poll on election day found something big. Around six in ten voters said America was wrong to strike Iran.
And about a third of voters said the war was a crucial factor in how they voted for Congress. That's behind the cost of living and government corruption. But still big enough to swing close races.
So six in ten voters are calling the war a mistake. And now the president agrees it cost him his majority.
But here's the twist. Trump isn't backing down from the decision.
He told the Wall Street Journal he has no regrets. He said quote "I did the right thing. I would have done it again."
He told Fox News why he started the war in the first place. He said the country could not let the number one state sponsor of terror get a nuclear weapon.
So the war cost him Congress. And he'd still do it again.
Trump also said the results surprised him. He held around 30 rallies for Republican candidates. He thought they'd do better. He said quote "I'm a little bit surprised. I thought they'd do better."
He said Democrats did a good job and fought hard. And he said he's willing to accept the results.
