Russia just wounded one of Ukraine's top security architects in a Kyiv strike
A Russian drone hit Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences about 21 hours ago.
It hit the Presidium building, right in central Kyiv.
And inside, working at the time, was Volodymyr Horbulin. He's 86. He used to run Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council.
He got cut by broken glass. Minor injuries, he says.
But the drone hit a room one floor above his office.
His personal assistant wasn't so lucky. She's only been named as Natalia. She was near the building. She was killed.
Horbulin told public broadcaster Suspilne he was at work when it happened, that he was slightly hurt, and that his assistant nearby had been killed.
Now here's who Horbulin actually is.
He ran Ukraine's National Space Agency in the 1990s. He led the National Security and Defence Council. He advised several presidents on national security.
He's one of the people who built Ukraine's missile and space programmes from scratch after independence. He helped shape the country's early security doctrine too.
He holds Hero of Ukraine. That's the country's highest honour. He's also a full knight of the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise.
Right now, he's Vice President of the Academy of Sciences.
So this drone didn't just hit a research building. It hit the floor above the office of a man who helped build Ukraine's entire post-independence security state.
Nobody has said whether he was the target. Russia hasn't said what it was aiming at, at all.
So what's the death toll? Nobody agrees.
Kyiv's mayor, Vitali Klitschko, said one woman was killed and three people were hurt at the site. A separate report said one dead and five injured. The Academy's own statement said two academicians had been killed, and that contact had been lost with several other people. Al Jazeera, the wire, reported at least two dead, with one body pulled from the rubble later that evening. And in his evening address, President Volodymyr Zelensky said a search was still going on for someone whose office took a direct hit.
