As of this morning's report, drones were still in Ukrainian airspace. The attack was still going on.
Impacts hit 24 locations. Debris from the shot-down missiles and drones landed at 16 more. No nationwide death or injury toll yet for this attack specifically.
That's everything we know.
Why this mattersThis comes one day after Russia hit one of Ukraine's most important scientific institutions. In broad daylight.
A Russian drone struck the Presidium building of Ukraine's National Academy of Sciences, in central Kyiv, during the working day. At least two people were killed.
Volodymyr Horbulin was in the building. He used to run Ukraine's National Security and Defence Council. He was slightly wounded. He says his assistant, who was nearby, was killed.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine's President, says at least nine people were killed and more than 80 wounded nationwide in that strike. Around 120 drones were used. 90 of them were jet-powered. Ukraine's air defences only caught 57 per cent of those.
So European leaders spoke up.
Emmanuel Macron, France's President, says Russia's regime has shown contempt for science and truth.
Ursula von der Leyen, the European Commission's President, says science has become a target for Russia. She says her heart goes out to those searching for people trapped inside.
Andrii Sybiha, Ukraine's Foreign Minister, said Russia was cynical to hit a scientific institution during the working day, and said Russia is pushing to see what the world will tolerate.
Now the timing.
Hours before that strike, Yevhenii Khmara, Ukraine's Defence Minister, was in Brussels. He told the EU's Foreign Affairs Council that Ukraine needs funding for interceptors against jet-powered Shahed drones. And Patriot missiles from EU countries' own stockpiles.
He asked the EU to move 2027 financing forward to this year. And to spend what's left of the EU's SAFE defence fund on this equipment now.
There's a wider exchange behind all of this too. Ukraine's General Staff says long-range strikes have knocked out more than 45 per cent of Russia's oil-refining capacity. Russia has answered with near-daily drone and missile barrages on Ukrainian cities.
Russia has not commented on either strike.
So what's not known? The full death and injury count from this overnight attack. Whether the Academy of Sciences was targeted on purpose or hit as part of a wider assault. And whether Russia answers Ukraine's request for EU funding with more escalation.
