Israel's ambassador to the US just had his son critically hurt in an attack

So who is Neria Leiter?

He's not the first son this ambassador has lost to this war.

His older brother, Major Moshe Yedidya Leiter, was killed fighting in northern Gaza back in November 2023. He was 39. A father of six. He was training to be a doctor.

And Neria kept serving anyway. His father says he's put in hundreds of days on multiple fronts since 7 October 2023.

Now his father is posting on X, thanking the IDF and the medical team at Shaare Zedek. He says quote "Neria needs a miracle".

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel's Prime Minister, replied on X too. He says the Netanyahu family is quote "praying for a miracle".

That's the Prime Minister of Israel, speaking directly to his own ambassador in Washington.

And here's the timing. This happened one day before Netanyahu is due to speak at the UN General Assembly.

It's not an isolated attack either.

Just days ago, on Yom Kippur eve, a settler named Netanel Shukrun was shot dead while bathing at a spring in the West Bank. The IDF arrested a suspect. That same day, there was a separate attempted car-ramming. The attacker was killed.

West Bank violence has been climbing since Hamas's attack on 7 October 2023 started the war in Gaza. An AFP count, based on Palestinian health ministry numbers, says Israeli forces or settlers have killed 1,110 Palestinians in the West Bank since then. Israeli figures put the number of Israelis killed in Palestinian attacks or Israeli military operations, in the same period, at 49.

The Israeli military just reinforced the area. It's sent the 98th Division headquarters into the southern West Bank to take command of the Etzion Brigade. That's an unusual move.

So what don't we know? How serious Neria Leiter's injuries really are. Whether he'll recover. Whether Israel now brings in new security measures across the West Bank.

And nobody has said yet what Netanyahu will tell the UN about this tomorrow.
