Europe just refused to let Trump carve it up with Russia
Ukraine just said no to Donald Trump's peace plan.
Well, not all of it. But enough of it.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Ukraine's President, went on CNN about 14 hours ago. Jake Tapper asked him about the security deal Donald Trump is building with Russia. And Zelenskyy didn't hold back.
He compared it to Yalta. That's the 1945 conference where the Allies carved up Europe into blocs after the Second World War. He says this new deal risks doing the same thing again, eighty years later, with Ukraine divided up by Russia.
That's Ukraine's president, in public, saying he does not trust where Donald Trump's negotiation is going.
And here's how he found out about it. Not from Donald Trump directly. He learned it during a phone call with Jared Kushner, Donald Trump's son-in-law and a US special envoy, and Steve Witkoff, another US special envoy. That call was supposed to be about preparing for talks with Russia. The framework just came up inside it.
So Ukraine wasn't in the room when this idea got built.
Donald Trump had described the plan the day before, at the White House, right after meeting Kirill Dmitriev, a Russian presidential envoy. Melania Trump, the First Lady, had arranged that meeting to mark a ceasefire in the occupied Ukrainian village of Oleshky.
Donald Trump said it would involve more than Ukraine. He even said it might cover all of Europe.
He called it a big, beautiful agreement. Said everyone would be thrilled.
But here's the thing. Nobody else seems to know what's actually in it. CNN says several European officials who know this conflict well told the network they had no idea what Donald Trump meant.
Even Zelenskyy says he doesn't know all the details. He says ending the war has to be settled before anyone talks about security guarantees. And he says this framework could actually be more dangerous for the European Union than for Ukraine. Why? Because Ukraine isn't in the EU or in NATO. So a deal that reshapes European security could bind EU members to something Ukraine never even signed.
And Zelenskyy isn't just warning. He's ruling things out.
He says quote "We are not ready to leave Donbas, to give our territory." He says he's still willing to meet Vladimir Putin in America, in Europe, or somewhere else neutral. Just not in Moscow.
