Why this mattersSo why does this base matter so much?
RAF Fairford is where America flies B-1 and B-52 bombers from to strike Iran. That's been happening since the war between Iran and the US and Israel started in February.
So this isn't just a British airfield. It's a working part of that war.
And Britain chose to be part of it. Keir Starmer, Prime Minister at the time, gave the US permission in March. Specific and limited defensive operations against Iran, he called it. That's the decision that put American bombers at Fairford in the first place.
Iran already told Britain what it thinks about that.
In July, Iran's Revolutionary Guard warned that any base used to launch attacks on Iranian territory is a legitimate target. That's Iran naming British soil as somewhere it could hit back.
Nobody has connected these five men to that warning. Police say clearly, no established Iran link. One agency, PA, reports the investigation wasn't intelligence-led. So police had no advance tip about a plot before the vans were spotted.
But here's why the timing still matters.
This is happening at the one base in Britain most tied to the Iran war. A few months after Iran named that exact kind of base as a target. And right now, that base is locked down and being searched for explosives.
Andy Burnham, the current Prime Minister, is being kept updated. Wes Streeting, the Defence Secretary, says this is being dealt with, and that it's exactly why Britain's emergency response teams and armed forces are on standby around the clock. The government won't say more while the investigation continues.
The US Air Force says none of its own troops were involved. It says it's working closely with UK police.
Here's what's still not known. Who the five men are. What was inside those three vehicles. Whether any explosives were actually recovered. And whether the men have any connection to Iran, or a group acting for it.
Until police say otherwise, this is an unexplained incident at the most exposed base in Britain, at the most exposed moment of this war.
