A local news site, Wiltshire 999s, says the operation may have started around 1am, and separately that FPCON DELTA, the highest US force protection alert, has been activated. Neither claim is confirmed by police or the US Air Force.
A US Air Force spokesperson says they're aware of the reporting but won't discuss specific force protection measures. They say the 501st Combat Support Wing and other UK-based wings remain vigilant. Iran has said nothing about today.
That's everything we know.
Why this mattersSo why does this base matter so much?
RAF Fairford has been at the centre of the war between America and Iran since March. That's when the base started launching strike sorties against Iranian targets. America's 501st Combat Support Wing is stationed right there.
And two months ago, Iran named this exact base as a target.
Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps warned that any base used to attack Iranian territory would be a legitimate target. They named RAF Fairford directly. That warning came after B-1B bombers reportedly flew missions against Iran from the base.
A UK government official responded at the time. Britain's armed forces stood ready 24 hours a day, they said, to defend the country using layered air and missile defences alongside NATO allies.
Here's the timeline. Keir Starmer, prime minister at the time, authorised US bombers to use Fairford against Iran back in March. Andy Burnham has since taken over as prime minister. He's kept that policy in place.
So here's the real question this morning. Is this the first sign that Iran's July warning was more than words? Or is this an unrelated domestic case that just happens to be unfolding next to a base already on a war footing?
Police haven't linked the arrests to Fairford or to Iran. Nothing published so far ties the men to any organised group.
But here's what we do know. This is the most serious security operation Fairford has seen since the war began. Armed police. Military bomb disposal specialists. An entire village evacuated. Whatever this turns out to be, the authorities are treating it as real.
Nobody has said what the men are suspected of planning. Nobody has said whether a device was found. And nobody has said whether this is connected to the war with Iran at all.
