Two Republicans just turned Reagan's name against Trump's Russia oil deal
Two Republican congressmen just put Ronald Reagan's name on a bill to block their own president's Russia oil deal.
Here's who. Brian Fitzpatrick, the Pennsylvania Republican who co-chairs the House Ukraine Caucus. He announced it a day ago.
The bill is called the Ronald Reagan Peace Through Strength Act. Simple job: block every US purchase of Russian oil.
Don Bacon of Nebraska is already signed on as an original co-sponsor.
Fitzpatrick posted this on social media. He says quote "we will be introducing bipartisan legislation to block any and all purchases of Russian oil."
He also said it will be forced to a vote and pass overwhelmingly.
So think about that. A Republican congressman promising to force a vote his own party's leadership doesn't want.
Now here's what set this off.
Two days ago, Donald Trump announced Russia would immediately send over 300,000 tons of diesel into US and global markets. That came straight after a phone call with Vladimir Putin.
And there's more coming. 500,000 tons in November. A million tons after that. Up to 3 million more, depending on Russian refineries.
The US Treasury has already issued a licence allowing these shipments. It runs until April 2027.
So why does Bacon care? He's not even running for re-election next month.
Which is exactly why he can say what he's saying. He told RFE/RL that propping up Russia's war economy is terrible, and that Trump has shown what he called a moral blindness about Putin.
Now the mechanics. Fitzpatrick wants to use something called a discharge petition. It forces a bill onto the floor for a vote even when leadership refuses to schedule one.
It needs 218 signatures. A majority of the whole House.
He doesn't have them yet. The bill hasn't even been formally introduced.
