America's ICE agency just shot a child's father in front of him
An ICE agent just shot a man in the Bronx. A five-year-old was in the back seat.
It happened about a day ago, just after 4pm, on the corner of West 225th Street and Marble Hill Avenue.
The man is Oscar Belgal. He's 28, and he's Dominican.
So what actually happened? NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch says at least one ICE agent fired seven rounds. One hit Oscar Belgal in the neck, just below his left ear.
His injuries aren't life-threatening. The five-year-old in the car, believed to be his son, wasn't hurt.
And here's where it turns political fast.
Zohran Mamdani, New York City's Mayor, called it an unconscionable and incredibly serious situation. His words.
He got straight on the phone. Two hours, trying to get Oscar Belgal released. He spoke to Donald Trump directly. And to Markwayne Mullin, the Homeland Security Secretary.
It didn't work.
After the call ended, ICE moved Oscar Belgal out of the hospital in an unmarked vehicle. Nobody knows where he went next.
Mamdani says the ICE agents were wearing construction vests and masks. Their faces were covered. He says there was no reasonable way to know they were law enforcement at all.
He called ICE an agency that must be abolished. Said it's rotten to its core. And he's now demanding, directly to Trump, that all ICE enforcement in New York City stop.
Kathy Hochul, the Governor of New York, made the same calls. To Trump. To Mullin. She asked them to halt ICE operations across the state. And she asked for the agents' body-camera footage to be released publicly.
So what does the Department of Homeland Security say happened?
It confirmed the shooting about four and a half hours after it happened. It says ICE agents were running a targeted enforcement operation to arrest Oscar Belgal. It says he has a prior conviction for grand larceny. Multiple prior arrests too — assault, robbery, drugs, weapons.
