A South Korean army staff sergeant has died at a frontline unit near the North Korean border.

He was found this morning with a severe head injury.

So here's what we know. A fellow soldier found him collapsed and unconscious at around 7:15am local time, inside a building at the unit in Cheorwon County, Gangwon Province. He died shortly after.

And Cheorwon sits right on South Korea's border with North Korea. One of the most heavily fortified borders on the planet.

South Korea's Defence Ministry confirmed his death a few hours ago.

The Army's own statement says the sergeant was found unconscious with injuries and later died, and that investigators are now looking into the exact cause and circumstances of the accident.

Both military and civilian investigators are on it.

So how was he hurt? The Army hasn't said. It hasn't said if he fell, if someone hurt him, or something else happened. All of that is still under investigation. No timeline for answers yet.

Now here's something worth flagging, carefully. One Korean outlet has reported the soldier was found bleeding from the head, and that the injury may have been a gunshot wound. South Korean authorities have not confirmed this. No other outlet has repeated it. So treat it as an unconfirmed report, not a fact.

This death comes about six weeks after three South Korean soldiers were hurt in explosions south of the Military Demarcation Line. That happened on 21 September.

The cause of those explosions was landmines. South Korea's military says North Korea laid them, as part of border fortification work it says North Korea has been carrying out since 2024. North Korea denies planting them. And it has not commented on today's death at all.
