Saudi Arabia just activated a military pact with Pakistan and Turkey
Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey just made a pact real.
For two months it was just paper. Now it's a working military coalition.
So what happened? An emergency meeting in Riyadh, a few hours ago. Saudi Arabia's Defense Minister, Khalid bin Salman, stood up and said the three countries are activating collective deterrence.
That means they're sending forces and military equipment into Saudi Arabia. Fast.
Khalid bin Salman posted that the meeting affirms quote "the solidarity and unified stance of our countries" and said it was activating collective deterrence against the aggressions that targeted the Kingdom and the holy sites.
Read that again. Saudi Arabia's own defence minister is naming an attack on Mecca and Medina as the reason this pact just went live.
All three countries condemned an attempt to target Mecca and Medina, plus ongoing attacks on Saudi cities, civilian sites and economic installations. Pakistan and Turkey praised how ready the Saudi military has been.
And the alliance just got its first boss. Retired Lieutenant General Numan Mahmud of Pakistan is now secretary-general, for three years.
So what actually is this pact?
It was signed two months ago, on 7 August. Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, and Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif all put their names on it.
Here's the clause that matters. An attack on any one of the three is treated as an attack on all three.
That's the twist. If whatever is hitting Saudi Arabia spreads to Pakistan or Turkey, all three respond together. Not alone anymore.
