Sochi's mayor, Andrei Proshunin, has shut the city's beaches and waterfront until further notice. The nearby Sirius territory has closed its beaches too, though officials say air and water pollution readings are still normal.
Nobody has confirmed who did this. Russia's Transport Ministry says unmanned boats hit the tanker, but doesn't name Ukraine. Ukraine has not claimed it.
That's everything we know.
Why this mattersSo why does this tanker matter so much?
Because it's not just any ship. Ukraine put the Aframax Rio on its own sanctions list back in February. It's one of 91 vessels Kyiv says belong to Russia's shadow fleet.
So what's a shadow fleet? Ships that keep selling Russian oil around Western sanctions. This one is registered in the Marshall Islands. The EU and its allies don't sanction it at all.
And that's exactly the trick. On paper, these ships belong to nobody in particular.
Ukraine has been going after Russian oil since the war started in 2022. Kyiv's position is that hitting tankers and refineries is a fair response to Russia bombing Ukrainian cities every night.
And this has happened before. Past strikes like this one have caused oil slicks, shut beaches, even sent black rain falling on nearby towns.
Here's the thing. Sochi is a major civilian resort. A fire this size, this close to a holiday city, raises real questions about oil reaching the water and the sand.
Now, some of the basic details don't line up yet. That's normal this soon after an attack. Some reports say the tanker was nearly fully loaded, sailing from the Russian port of Novorossiysk toward India. One report says it was travelling from Turkey to Romania instead. And estimates of the distance from Sochi range from about 11 to 15 kilometres.
This also happened on a night of heavy fighting elsewhere. Russia hit several Ukrainian cities. Ukraine sent almost 900 drones toward Moscow, the same night the tanker caught fire.
Andrei Nikitin, Russia's Transport Minister, confirmed the rescue and said there were enough resources in place to fight the fire. Beyond that, Russia hasn't formally accused Ukraine, and hasn't announced any retaliation.
The Russian Transport Ministry says quote "crude oil is burning openly in the waters of the Black Sea".
So what don't we know? How much oil has burned or spilled into the Black Sea. Whether Ukraine will ever claim the strike. And whether Russia plans to hit back.
