Nobody knows what the projectile was. Nobody knows where it came from. Nobody's claimed it.
That's everything we know.
Why this mattersSo why does this matter? Because it's not a one-off.
UKMTO says this is the busiest month for attacks on shipping in the Strait of Hormuz since March. Ten attacks in one week alone. One ship sunk.
And here's the thing. Most ships aren't even reporting when they get hit anymore. So the real number is probably higher.
At least three commercial vessels were hit in the region this week. All suspected Iranian attacks. A different tanker was hit by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz six days ago and was damaged.
Now, the location matters here. Jubail sits on Saudi Arabia's Gulf coast. That's the same stretch of water as those Hormuz attacks.
It's not the Red Sea side further south, where Iran-backed Houthi fighters have been hitting Saudi targets. They hit Riyadh's airport last weekend. About 13 people died. But that's a different coastline, a different campaign, a different stretch of water entirely.
Iran's foreign ministry has rejected Saudi Arabia's accusation that Tehran is behind the Houthi attacks. Iran has offered to mediate instead.
And all of this is happening inside a bigger war. America, Israel and Iran have been fighting since February.
Oil markets already feel it. Brent crude hit $110 a barrel two days ago. That's its highest point since May. It jumped 3.7% in a week. WTI, the US benchmark, passed $100 a barrel for the first time since September.
Cargo through the Strait of Hormuz is still close to normal, more than 100 million barrels of crude last week. But Eurasia Group just raised its odds of this war escalating further. 65%, up from 35%.
Donald Trump hasn't ruled out using the "Mother of All Bombs" on Iran. The Pentagon has plans ready for a similar weapon if ordered.
So three questions are still open. What hit the tanker. Who fired it. And whether this belongs to the Hormuz pattern, the Houthi campaign further south, or something else entirely.
Right now, nobody has answered any of them. Not UKMTO. Not Saudi Arabia. Not Iran. Not the Houthis.
