Lithuania just found drone wreckage near its Latvian border
An unidentified object just flew into Lithuanian airspace.
And it set off a full shelter order.
Lithuania's National Crisis Management Centre issued a red alert a few hours ago. Panevėžys and Šiauliai counties. People were told to get inside. The alert was lifted later that morning.
Kaunas airport shut down while the thing was in the air. That's Lithuania's second-biggest airport, closed because of one object nobody could identify.
So where did it come from? Robertas Kaunas, Lithuania's Defence Minister, says it came in from Poland.
He's now proposing a joint investigation with Poland's Defence Minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz.
And Poland is already looking into it too. Poland's military says it's separately investigating a possible breach of its own airspace.
NATO scrambled fighter jets to find the object. They couldn't see it. Cloud cover. And they never tried to shoot it down.
Here's what they found instead. Debris, near a village called Juodzionys, in Pasvalys district, close to the Latvian border.
Some of that debris hit a civilian car. Robertas Kaunas confirmed it. No injuries reported.
Latvia briefly put out its own warning too, a lower-level "yellow" alert, in the regions next to Lithuania. Then lifted it. Latvia's military says it's possible the object blew up on its own.
Gitanas Nausėda, Lithuania's President, says what appeared to be a drone exploded over the north of the country. He says it put civilians in danger.
People on the ground heard a loud bang. But nobody has confirmed the object was even carrying explosives.
So right now, nobody can say for certain what this thing was. Where it was made. Or whether it was built to carry a bomb at all.
