Italy just put Israel's defence minister under investigation for alleged torture
Italy just put Israel's defence minister under criminal investigation.
His name is Israel Katz. Rome prosecutors named him a few hours ago.
And he's not alone. 12 senior Israeli military, police and prison officials are named too. Israel's military chief, Eyal Zamir, is one of them.
So what are they accused of? Torture. Kidnapping. Personal injury. Robbery. Damage. All allegedly committed when Israeli forces stopped small fleets of activist boats heading to Gaza, in 2025 and 2026.
Here's how this started. 50 Italian citizens were detained during two Global Sumud Flotilla missions. The first ran from September to October 2025. The second ran from April to May 2026.
The first flotilla left Barcelona with dozens of boats carrying hundreds of activists. Israeli forces intercepted it in international waters in early October. Hundreds were detained, then deported.
The second left Barcelona in April 2026. Israeli forces started intercepting it near Crete on 30 April. By 19 May, around 430 people had been detained across about 50 ships. The last interceptions happened off Cyprus.
Activists from the first mission say they were beaten, injured, threatened with death, insulted and accused of terrorism.
And the second mission? Activists say it was worse. Beatings in the dark. Tasers. Rubber bullets.
Here's the part that's hard to read. Activists have reported at least 15 cases of sexual assault, including rape.
Luca Poggi is an Italian economist who was detained. He told Reuters in May that he was stripped, thrown to the ground and kicked.
Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel's National Security Minister, posted a video of himself taunting cable-tied, kneeling activists at a makeshift prison at Ashdod port, while Israel's national anthem played.
