America just accused Ukraine of not wanting peace while its own envoys negotiate
Volodymyr Zelenskyy picked up the phone with Donald Trump's envoys a day ago.
And a few hours later, Donald Trump went on Truth Social and said Zelenskyy doesn't even want peace.
So let's break this down.
Zelenskyy talked to Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner for 40 minutes. He says he briefed them on a separate meeting between Ukrainian and American teams in Florida. He says the two sides are talking almost constantly now. Patriot air defence deliveries came up too.
Then Trump posted.
He said he's making great progress on peace between Russia and Ukraine. He said he doesn't want to foolishly push Russia away from the table.
Then he turned on Zelenskyy.
Donald Trump says quote "he doesn't want to end this war and probably never did".
He also said Ukraine's strikes on Russian diesel refineries are hurting diesel markets around the world, including in America.
So think about what just happened. Trump's own negotiators were on the phone with Zelenskyy. And on the same day, Trump is telling the world Zelenskyy doesn't want this to end.
Nobody in the White House has explained the gap. We don't know if this is a strategy or an actual split inside the administration.
And it comes after a rough week between Washington and Kyiv.
Trump blocked new sanctions on Russia. He struck a diesel trade deal with Moscow. Both moves have Kyiv and European capitals worried that Washington is leaning towards Russia.
Zelenskyy says something else went wrong too. He told NBC's Meet the Press that US intelligence sharing got blocked, then unblocked, and that Ukraine didn't get it during three days of Russian missile attacks. He said it would be a historic mistake for America to formally side with Russia. He said he hopes Trump changes his decisions.
